Product Description

Ammonium Electrode

The Ammonium Electrode is a hand crafted PVC membrane ion-selective electrode which measures ammonium ions in aqueous solutions simply, quickly, accurately and economically. If you have the mono-model ammonium electrode, then you also need a reference electrode.Carefully follow the directions on this instruction sheet to obtain the best performance and electrode life.

Technical Indexes

Required Equipment

1. Ion meter or pH/mV meter

2. Wash bottle with distilled or deionized water

3. Several clean beakers, 150 mL or larger.

4.1 mL, 10 mL, and 100 mL pipettes

5. Reference Electrode for Mono-model. Combination Model does not require a Reference Electrode.

Required Solutions

1. 1000 ppm as NH4+ Standard Solution

2. Ionic Strength Adjuster (ISA) Solution

3. Reference Fill Solution

4. For FastFil (Refillable) Combination Model

5. For Reference Electrode used with the Mono-model. (Sold separately. Not included in the Mono-electrode package)

Electrode Preparation

1.Remove the protection cap or sleeve covering the electrode tip. Caution: Do not touch the PVC membrane with your fingers.

2.Mono

a)When fitting the spare membrane module, refer to Fig. 1 Do not over tighten.

b)The reference electrode must be prepared as described in the Reference Electrode Instruction Manual. Fill the Reference electrode with the Reference Fill Solution.

3.FastFil (Refillable) Combination – the reference (outer) chamber must be filled with the Reference Fill Solution .

a)Slide the sleeve of the electrode FastFil cap down to uncover the fill hole.

b)Fill the reference chamber with the Reference Fill Solution

c)Slide the FastFil cap back up and shake the electrode downward like a thermometer to remove any air bubble trapped inside.

d)The surface of the Reference Fill Solution inside the reference chamber must be above the inner junction. This is approximately 3” from the electrode tip.

e)Slide the FastFil cap down to uncover the fill hole. The fill hole should remain open during testing.

4.PermaFil (Sealed) Combination – the reference chamber is gel filled and sealed. No Reference Fill Solution required.

a)Rinse the electrode with DI water, blot dry. Do not rub dry.

b)Soak the electrode in DI water for 10 minutes, then in a diluted ammonium standard solution (either 0.0001 M or 1 ppm) for 2 hours prior to calibration.

Measurement

If using a meter with direct connection reading capability (See meter instruction manual for specific information):

1.Place 100 mL of the more diluted standard solution into a 150 mL beaker. Add 2 mL of ISA. Stir thoroughly.

2.Rinse thr electrode with DI water, blot dry and place in the beaker. Wait for a stable reading, and then adjust the meter to display the vaule of the standard. Refer to the meter’s instruction manual for the meter adjustment procedure.

3.Measure 100 mL of the more concentrated standard solution into a second 150 mL beaker. Add 2 mL of ISA and stir.

4.Rinse the electrode with DI water, blot dry and place in the second beaker. Wait for a stable reading, and then adjust the meter to display the value of the second standard

5.Pipette 100 mL of sample into a 150 mL beaker. Add 2 mL of ISA and stir thoroughly.

6.Rinse the electrode with DI water, blot dry and place in the sample beaker. Wait for a stable reading and the sample concentration will be displayed on the meter.
